Carbon Disulphide (CS2)
CAS # 75-15-0

Carbon disulfide (CS₂) is a volatile, colorless liquid with a pungent, sulfur-like odor, widely used in industrial chemistry. CS₂ is a linear molecule with no dipole moment, and it serves as an excellent nonpolar solvent for substances like sulfur, phosphorus, iodine, waxes, and resins.
Industrially, carbon disulfide is crucial in the production of viscose rayon and cellophane, where it reacts with cellulose and caustic soda to form cellulose xanthate. It’s also used in the manufacture of carbon tetrachloride, rubber accelerators, flotation agents, and pesticides.
