Benzyl Cyanide
CAS # 140-29-4

Benzyl cyanide (BnCN), or 2‑phenylacetonitrile, is an aromatic compound (C₆H₅CH₂CN) that serves as a direct precursor to phenylacetic acid. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow oily liquid with a sharp, pungent odor. Owing to its active methylene and versatile nitrile group, it is a widely used intermediate in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, and flavor chemistry.
Its primary transformation is hydrolysis, where acid or base converts the nitrile group into phenylacetic acid. It also functions as a key building block in drugs such as phenobarbital, methylphenidate, and analgesics like pethidine. Additionally, hydrogenation yields β‑phenethylamine, a precursor for high-value floral and honey-like fragrance compounds.
